A Journey of Creative and Personal Growth

Early Creativity and Growth

Hi, I’m Nico — and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been a creator at heart. My parents used to call me “el niño de los inventos”the boy of inventions — because I was always coming up with new ways to make life more fun, more beautiful, and maybe just a little more efficient.

When my family moved to the U.S. in 5th grade, we didn’t have much. My sister and I shared the master bedroom, turning it into our little world. After homework, we’d spend hours playing and painting on flattened cardboard boxes. I used cheap watercolors to decorate our walls — and to this day, those same paints are still tucked away in my garage like a time capsule from a simpler time.

By freshman year of high school, I had my first iPhone 6. Suddenly, a whole new world of creativity opened up. Photography, video, editing — though back then “editing” mostly meant slapping a filter on an Instagram post. Soon, I was making vlogs in iMovie and uploading them to YouTube, convinced I might just go viral. They were awkward and cringey in the best way, but I didn’t care — I was creating, and that was enough. I begged my parents for a camera, and the summer before sophomore year, they finally surprised me with one. That year, my creative world expanded — watercolors, ink, collage, poetry, photography, and yes… more vlogging.

High school was a whirlwind. I attended three different schools in four years, meeting new people and adapting to new environments. By junior year, I left vlogging behind but kept pursuing photography, teaching myself Lightroom through YouTube tutorials. My junior and senior years were especially rewarding creatively — I had seven poems published in my school’s literary magazine, along with several drawings and paintings.

Transformation and Artistic Evolution

I entered college as a biology major, thinking I might pursue medicine but quickly switched to psychology. I was a creative with big ambition but little guidance on turning my passions into a career. Sophomore year, I came out as transgender — and suddenly, my creative patterns made sense. I had stopped vlogging because I couldn’t stand to see myself on camera. My photography had turned darker, shadow-heavy. My poems had been quiet cries for help. I had been retreating into my work without realizing it.

Coming out changed everything. My light returned. I picked up my brushes again and added a Studio Art minor, diving into oil painting. I painted on canvases as tall as me, losing myself in the process. One of those works was displayed at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art. Another two became the cover for the College of Charleston’s literary magazine, Miscellany.

Finding Purpose and Growing My Voice

With confidence finally back in my voice, I found myself drawn again to digital content creation. At first, it was just for fun — lighthearted videos, trending clips, small creative experiments. But those little moments turned into something bigger: mini vlogs, workout videos, advice content. Slowly, my work began to resonate, and before I knew it, I had built a community of nearly 70,000 followers across platforms.

Then came my junior year of college, when I stepped into the role of Media Director for Cougar Excursion. Camera in hand, I was tasked with documenting a trip designed to introduce freshmen to the campus and the community. What I didn’t expect was how deeply it would reawaken something in me. I wasn’t just capturing images; I was capturing stories, energy, and connection. Once I picked the camera back up, I couldn’t put it down.

Now, as I work toward my M.S. in Digital Marketing, my focus has shifted. It’s not about chasing numbers or fleeting fame. It’s about crafting work people want to binge-watch, follow, and share — the kind of stories that linger in someone’s mind and maybe even leave a mark on their heart. I’ve found my passion: helping stories — whether personal or brand-driven — find their voice in an oversaturated, noisy world.

Today, I channel that passion as the Social Media Specialist at Charleston Power Yoga, blending my love for digital content creation, editing, and brand management with my dedication to fitness and health. Not only do I strive to help other brands thrive, but I’m also working to grow my own personal brand into something bigger than just me — a space where creativity, connection, and purpose can live side by side.
