A Nostalgic Couples Photoshoot in Charleston | Mack & Tommy
Some photoshoots are about more than just taking beautiful pictures. They’re about revisiting the places that shaped us, remembering the people we were, and creating new memories in places that will always feel like home. My couples session with Mack and Tommy in Charleston was exactly that.
We started the afternoon at the College of Charleston, a place that holds so many memories for all of us. Walking through the familiar streets of campus, we couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was surreal to be back in the same place where we had spent four years of our lives, building friendships, figuring things out, and making memories that would stay with us long after graduation.

Back Where It All Began
Our session started along the charming streets of the College of Charleston before making our way into Cougar Mall and eventually to the iconic Cistern. There’s something special about returning to a place that once felt like your entire world. The buildings, pathways, and familiar corners brought back memories of late nights, college adventures, and the everyday moments that mean so much more when you look back on them.
Mack and I share a particularly special connection to this place. We were college roommates for two years while serving as resident assistants, sharing a living space and navigating so many experiences during a formative chapter of our lives. Coming back to campus together felt like stepping into a time capsule. So much has changed since those days, yet being there again brought back the feeling of being right where we belonged.
And now, we were back creating a whole new set of memories, this time with Tommy joining us in front of the camera.

Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera
At the beginning of the session, both Mack and Tommy were a little nervous. Being in front of a camera can feel awkward at first, especially when you're not used to being photographed. Even though Mack and I have known each other for years, stepping into a photoshoot is a different experience!
We took our time, walked around campus, talked, and laughed as we made our way through the different locations. My goal was to help them feel comfortable and let the moments happen naturally rather than worry about getting every pose perfect.
As we continued, the initial nerves started to fade. The smiles became more genuine, the laughter came more easily, and the session began to feel less like a photoshoot and more like an afternoon spent enjoying each other's company.
That's one of my favorite things about couples photography. You don't need to know how to pose or have experience in front of a camera. Sometimes, all you need is a little direction, a beautiful location, and the person you feel most comfortable being yourself around.

Exploring Downtown Charleston
After exploring campus, we made our way downtown, wandering through the streets of Charleston and continuing the session along the way.
One of my favorite things about photographing in Charleston is how much character the city brings to every session. From the historic architecture and charming streets to the beautiful natural light, there's always something that makes each location feel unique.

Moving away from campus gave the photos a different atmosphere while keeping the experience relaxed and natural. We'd spent the first part of the afternoon revisiting a place filled with shared memories, and now we were exploring the city and creating new ones.
By this point, Mack and Tommy had settled into the session, and the nervousness from the beginning was long gone. We were able to focus on capturing their connection, the little moments between poses, and the personalities that make photographs feel authentic.

Ending the Session at Waterfront Park
We wrapped up the afternoon at Waterfront Park, ending the session beside the water. It was the perfect way to close out a day spent exploring Charleston, with the waterfront providing a beautiful and peaceful backdrop for our final photographs.
After starting among the familiar buildings of the College of Charleston and making our way through downtown, ending by the water felt like a natural conclusion to the afternoon.
Looking back, what made this session so meaningful wasn't just the locations or the photographs themselves. It was the opportunity to return to a place that played such an important role in our lives, reminisce about our college years, and create something new with people who mean so much to me.
As a photographer, I love capturing couples in a way that feels genuine to who they are. Not every session needs a special occasion. Sometimes, it's simply about celebrating your relationship, documenting this chapter of your lives, and having photographs you can look back on for years to come.
Mack and Tommy, thank you for spending the afternoon exploring Charleston with me. Getting to photograph you both while revisiting so many of my own college memories made this session especially meaningful.
Sometimes, the best way to appreciate how far we've come is to return to where it all began.
